Session Overview:
African women have played a critical role in the economic, political and social development of the continent. The dynamics and intersections of gender, ethnicity, age, class, race and so on often relegate women in Africa to some of the most marginalized groups of people. Thus insights from these constituencies can only help strengthen the effectiveness of the philanthropic sector. African women have a long and largely unrecognized ‘her story’ of giving and community mobilizing. This session seeks to uncover the myriad ways in which African women have been and are organizing in philanthropic endeavor. Seen through the experiences of a number of women actors from the private sector, cultural institutions and community organizing, the Talk Show explores, what are the key contributions by the constituencies of African women, what are challenges and successes, and how can their efforts strengthen or enhance philanthropy in Africa?
