Organisation Goals

Uluntu Community Foundation envisions independent and self-reliant communities (men, women and children) free from poverty and hunger in a sustainable environment.

To facilitate sustainable community development through partnerships in order to alleviate poverty and hunger in the targeted communities.

To improve infrastructure in schools and reduce dropout levels among targeted primary and secondary school children. To improve food security and livelihoods in targeted communities. To research and promote industrial productivity in rural areas through skills and knowledge, thereby generating employment and income. To provide revolving grants and support skills for community initiatives towards social entrepreneurship.

Organisation Works

Economic empowerment - The Foundation’s strategy is to help provide revolving grants, training and support skills for community initiatives towards social entrepreneurship.

Youth Development - Youth civic engagement is one part that the Foundation is working on in building its programmes.

Women - The marked increased levels of gender-based violence and abuse of children especially girls is cause for concern as it directly affects development programming. Intervention strategies in programming for women are critical and UCF has a specific programme to address gender inequality and promote the implementation of appropriate policies and laws.

Business and Enterprise Development - Uluntu acts as a convener and catalyst by empowering the marginalised communities of Matabeleland to kick start their development projects. The Foundation has managed to support 3 women-led groups in Matabeleland South Province through trainings on business management. This disadvantaged group now has a means of providing food and income for their families.

Environment - The Foundation is partnering with communities in reducing poverty at the same time inculcating a sense of environmental consciousness and lobbying for adoption of environmental friendly practices such as terracing and conservation farming.

HIV and AIDS - Zimbabwe has one of the highest rates of HIV infection in Africa even though government statistics indicate that HIV prevalence has declined from about 24% to about 21%. However, the current number of 200 000 people receiving the life saving ARVs from the government is still far below the estimated national target of 800 000. Despite spirited awareness campaigns on HIV and AIDS, behaviour change is still a challenge that government alone can never address.

Community Development - The Foundation is convinced that the key to sustainable livelihoods is in the empowerment of households as development change agents themselves. Uluntu will provide a channel for local and international partnerships to support projects initiated by communities. Uluntu intends supporting communities to set up a Community Scholarship Fund. The Fund will be supported by proceeds realised from the income generating projects and donations. As an activity to address the above critical needs, the Foundation will provide support towards school fees, furniture repairs, recreational facilities and reliable clean water sources.
